Choosing a sniper scope is no easy task, and it is usually only done by those in the military or police force, which are both heavily regulated by laws and legal bindings. In the United States there are many guidelines that need to be adhered to when purchasing a sniper scope. Sniping for military purposes and sniping for hunting purposes are completely separate things, and may require different tools.

When buying a sniper scope the first thing to note is the magnification. 6x magnification is a good range, and 10x is pushing the limits a bit too far. Sniper scopes with huge magnification from a long range are useless because the image can become blurred and off target. Avoid buying ones with too much magnification, especially if the weather is too humid, hot, cold, rainy, or foggy. Larger magnification calls for absolutely perfect weather, and if you don’t have that it is a waste of time. Larger scopes have more power, but are not what you will always need for optimal results. Smaller scopes are of course, smaller in power but work well if you are at a relatively close distance.

US Marine Corp sniper scopes provide the best technology, but are next to impossible to purchase without special licensures and knowledge of how to obtain one legally. Learning the proper use of a sniper scope could involve taking a class or two to learn how to handle the mechanisms.

Would you install a cheap tire on an expensive car? The same concept applies to buying a sniper scope. You wouldn’t want to install something cheap on an expensive new gun, would you? Your sniper scope should match the cost of your gun and possibly cost more than the pistol itself. Price is very important and the quality of your scope will reflect in its performance.

The quality of the glass used to make the scope is also very important. You can read reviews all day, but until you test a scope and determine the quality and strength of the glass used – you will not know if it is a suitable scope. Low quality glass will reveal ugly reflections and make shooting accurately very difficult. High quality glass will be clear and difficult to even notice at all.

Low light reticles have illuminated crosshairs that can be helpful if you are shooting in lower light conditions or around twilight. They can be nuisance so be sure to test them before making your final purchase. If you don’t know what you are getting into, then always test!

The finish style of the scope is also important. Matte finishes are best because they will not cause your reflection or glare to give away your position. If you prefer a glossy finish be aware that you will be easily spotted by either animals while hunting, or your enemy while in battle.

If you are using a tactical paintball gun then a sniper scope is also possible for use. The same rules for purchasing apply to a tactical paintball gun scope, but are much harder to find and install. For these you need a special paintball gun.

If you hunt then a fog reducing or fog proof sniper scope is most necessary. Foggy lens problems can cause visibility issues, so choose one that keeps the fog at bay. Keep in mind that fog proof scopes are very expensive, but worth it if you shoot often. A cheap scope is OK to buy if you shoot less often.

Overall sniper scopes are a useful tool to have for hunting, and very useful if you are in the military. A sniping scope isn’t always necessary unless you want to master your shooting skills for fast and on target shots.
